Auto upgrades not always the best option for business
We are fielding an increasing number of questions about the upcoming Windows 10 upgrade. You and your staff may have already noticed a little green icon (the Windows icon) in your taskbar (right-hand bottom of your screen)
If clicked a pop-up will appear requesting an email address and come launch date your PC will automatically start downloading Windows 10. The upgrade process has two steps
- Reserve – Reserve your FREE upgrade to Windows 10 now. It will download once available, and you can cancel your reservation at any time.
- Install – You’ll get a notification after Windows 10 is downloaded to your device. Install it right away or pick a time that’s good for you.
Reserving makes little sense at this time and creates an uncontrolled upgrade environment. The upgrade is being driven by Microsoft as FREE but for businesses owners there is a cost as uncontrolled upgrades can also lead to problems.
- Security risk
- Crashing system
- Large downloads eat up internet data
- Download not completing properly
- Compatibility issues with hardware and/or existing software on PC
- Upgrade not fully tested and bugs fixed
- Mixed versions of windows with an office environment causing compatibility issues between machines
Even if this upgrade is available to you and your staff we advise waiting under we are satisfied that launch issues have been rectified by Microsoft. There is no real rush as the upgrade offer lasts until July 2016.
Contact us to discuss upgrade rollout options for your business. A controlled upgrade will save you money in the long run and avoid internet data blowouts caused by a bunch of computers automatically updating. Our time is better spent proactively controlling an upgrade rather than fixing problems when software stops working properly or systems crash.
As a first step, we recommend ‘blocking upgrades’ on business PC’s. This enables us to help you control and plan your updates.
