UFB and Business Fibre
With connectivity being more important than ever in today’s working environment you may be considering upgrading your business to a Fibre internet connection.
When upgrading to Fibre one of the first choices you will need to make is whether you want to invest in the government’s recent UFB Fibre initiative, or the traditional method of the service to workplaces in New Zealand – Business Fibre.
Business Fibre offers the best Fibre service the lines can offer – blazing fast speeds when compared to traditional internet solutions, and priority ensuring the most consistent speeds as possible. For businesses requiring guaranteed quality of service with consistent connections, there is a strong case to be argued for Business Fibre. However with the combination of paying for hardware and a prioritised connection, Business Fibre can be prohibitively expensive and this is the primary reason a Fibre connection has only been an option for large-scale businesses in New Zealand.
This is where UFB comes in.
While it uses the same technology as Business Fibre, the UFB rollout brings affordable Fibre connections throughout much of New Zealand. Not only does it have much cheaper ongoing costs, it also greatly reduces the cost of bringing Fibre itself to your business premises – the cost which has traditionally priced-out smaller operations. While a UFB connection is still magnitudes faster than any non-fibre connection, it does have a caveat.
Like traditional internet solutions such as ADSL and VDSL, UFB is load-dependent. This means that connection speed is prone to dropping during peak-times when there is a high number of users / a large amount of traffic on the network. If your business is currently running an ADSL or VSDL connection and you have noticed the internet performing abnormally slow at certain times, you will have experienced load-based slowdown. It is important to note however that regardless of slow-down a Fibre connection will always be much faster than its counterparts.
In conclusion UFB allows small-to-medium-sized businesses to take advantage of the great speeds Fibre technology offers without incurring the large costs traditionally associated with it. However if your business is heavily dependent on a stable-connection at all times and can justify the cost increase – then it may be worth sticking to a Business Fibre connection.
